"Mom, Cate ands I are twins! We love the same things!"

I wish I had pictures or a video for this post. Pictures of my two children screaming with delight and laughter as they splashed through mud puddles today. The muddier, the deeper, the greater their joy.

It was supposed to be 80 and sunny today, but we woke up to a light drizzle and clouds. We had planned to go to the beach today, and I took them anyway, but the gate to the park was locked. I was feeling a bit defeated and a bit of the rainy-day-mother panic... what to do with two high energy children when we have already used up all of our fingerprint... and a bit of my summer-is almost over- panic that strikes as soon as the solstice passes each year.

"Summer's lease hath all to short a date..." is my anxiety-laden mantra, especially after too many days of cool rain. I like to be hot. I would like one rainy day per summer season and a few violent thunderstorms. I want the beach, a boat, a pool to be our only options. I want twelve fans running in the house.

We ended up letter boxing - following a great, dense trail that seemed almost primeval in the misty rain. (If you want to try some letterboxing of your own, check out http://www.letterboxing.org/). Alex was in his element. The clues were many, shrouded in some mystery, but accurate and easy to follow. We followed along the river, hoods up, but so protected by the trees that even the heavy drops of a sudden downpour didn't reach our heads.

We found the box hidden at the base of a tree, buried in leaves and twigs. It was wet and covered with mud, but dry inside, protecting an intricate stamp.

But the real fun started on the walk back to the car. The parking lot was loaded with puddles and Cate and Alex hit every one.

"Now this is what I call living!" shouted the boy-pirate before splashing mud up to his knees. "This is better then any old beach!"

And rainy day or not, I had to agree.
